Google just unveiled its own smartphone, the Nexus One, upping the stakes once again in the smartphone arena. Unveiled at Google headquarters in Mountain View California, The Nexus One is powered with Android 2.1 (Google’s operating system for smartphones) which means it offers full support for services like Gmail and is ready to tie in with social networking services like Facebook and Twitter.

The hardware has been designed by Taiwanese handset maker HTC, and as was widely expected, is now selling them unlocked via the company's Web site. The price of an unlocked Nexus One smartphone? $529.

The fact that Google itself is selling the phone, and with the option to buy one without ties to a wireless carrier, marks a departure from the way in which cell phones are generally sold in the U.S. The phone also can be purchased for $179 with a two-year wireless contract with T-Mobile.

This spring, the Nexus One will be available at a discounted price with a Verizon contract. And Vodafone will subsidize the phone in Europe, Google said.

On the hardware front, the Nexus One sports a speedy 1 GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm and a large 3.7-inch, 800 by 480-pixel AMOLED display, along with a 5 megapixel video-capable camera with an LED flash. For navigation, the Nexus One sports a trackball for navigating the interface and menus, and the trackball doubles as a notification light, shining different colors (blue or white) when calls, notifications, and messages come in.

The Nexus One sports a full bank of proximity, light, and motion sensors, along with an integrated assisted GPS receiver and a compass, plus two microphones (front and back) to support active noise cancellation technology. The camera can capture video in MPEG4 format, ideal for uploading to Google services like Picassa and YouTube, in addition to 3G connectivity, sports 802.11b/g/n WiFi and stereo Bluetooth wireless technology. The device has 512 MB of flash storage and supports microSD cards for storage.

Still too early for me to get my hands on one these, but if anyone has a Nexus One please drop a comment here and let the rest of us poor slobs know how you like it.

You may find it quite overwhelming when you are looking for just the right PDA smartphone. One look at any nearby store will show you the vast range of available brands and models. BATON ROUGE, La., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- On the heels of their participation in the National Safety Summit in Washington, D.C. obdEdge, llc, a member of the BlackBerry® ISV Alliance Program, announced today, the availability of the consumer version of cellcontrol(TM) -- the first comprehensive, patent-pending technology to curb the use of mobile devices while driving -- for BlackBerry® smartphones. cellcontrol is currently available for the BlackBerry® Pearl(TM) Flip; BlackBerry® Bold(TM); BlackBerry® Storm(TM), BlackBerry® Tour(TM) and BlackBerry® Curve(TM) series of smartphones, using BlackBerry® Device Software 4.5 and above.

cellcontrol works by plugging into the on-board computer, usually found underneath the steering column, of vehicles made in 1996 or later. Using Bluetooth® technology and a downloadable application for the BlackBerry smartphone, cellcontrol detects when a vehicle is in motion (moving above one mile per hour) and performs the following actions:

* Prevents the sending of texts and emails,
* sends incoming calls to voicemail and shows a missed call,
* prevents outgoing phone calls (except emergency numbers, i.e. 911 and user programmed "allowed" numbers.

There's no loss of communication to the user, as text messages and e-mail are received on the device. Users can also choose to block all mobile functions or select to block only texts or only phone calls, etc. cellcontrol can also prevent GPS and other mapping services from displaying on a Smartphone, if the user chooses. When the vehicle is stopped, all handset functions automatically return to normal.

Additionally, cellcontrol enables users to program certain numbers to be allowed through the system. For example, a parent can specify that calls from the home number or the parent's cell phone number(s) would still come through to their teen driver's phone. Users also have the freedom to customize which mobile features they want to restrict. For example, a user in Austin, TX may choose to block only text messages (since that is currently Texas state law) but still allow phone calls and email. The technology allows for one smartphone to be paired with many vehicles, or many smartphones paired to one vehicle, and will not affect passengers' cell phones.

Research has shown drivers who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident, and drivers who talk on the phone, even on hands-free devices are four times more likely to cause an accident. This results in over 500,000 injury-resulting accidents each year. "Distracted driving is a pandemic problem in our country and Secretary LaHood and Pres. Obama were clear in their desire to end it," said obdEdge managing partner Rob Guba. "We know cellcontrol has the ability to dramatically reduce distracted driving and help citizens follow Pres. Obama's mandate of no texting while driving. We have the potential to lower insurance premiums, worker's compensation claims, vehicle accidents, and ultimately save lives," he said.

cellcontrol PRO(TM) is the version for businesses, from large corporations with a fleet of vehicles to small businesses with only a few vehicles. cellcontrol PRO(TM) has the same key features as the consumer model, but with the ability to monitor additional vehicle-statistics.
